So, Destiny then.
I’ve been fairly addicted to it for the past few months, and the Iron Banner has been one of my favourite aspects – I look forward to it rolling around every month. I can’t put my finger on exactly why I like the week of Iron Banner so much to be honest. Is it because it is a little more serious or hardcore than the regular Crucible shenanigans? Is it because of the nice high level armour and powerful weapon drops? Is it because I find the storyline and in-game reasoning for having an Iron Banner event quite compelling?
I think it is a little bit of all of those reasons.
It feels more hardcore. There are a fair amount of serious Destiny players in the Iron Banner every month, you can tell because they tend to dominate the matches and have rare emblems that you can only earn through serious time dedication or a high skill level. Matches are sometimes very one-sided because of this – if one team is comprised of skilled players while the other is not… You get the idea. Mercifully, if the games are too lop-sided then they are ended early. Quite often though the matches are even and fiercely competitive, it reminds me of the heady days of 4v4 Team Slayer in Halo 2.
I find the story that has been woven into the Iron Banner event fascinating. The baseline in-game fiction for having competitive player v player modes is good enough as it is – Guardians need to be sharp, their skills need to be honed. But the Iron Banner is a layer above, in that it is training Guardians to not just defend humanity, but push back against the Darkness.
I really like Destiny, but I should probably play less of it, do something productive with my time instead 😀
