When you think about things in ways you never expected…

…because you did something stupid.

I feel like I may need to elaborate a little more on what I wrote yesterday – it was a little obtuse. It’s all very well me saying that I don’t want to do this or do want to do that, but if I don’t act on it then things will never change. The only person who can change me is me. The only person who truly gets value from a motivational quote is someone who understands it and acts on it. My viewpoints on a lot of things have changed – some recently, some a long time ago. I drew a couple of Adventure Time sketches the other day. I used to have a hang-up about fan-art, in that if it didn’t look exactly as the original creator or an authorised, in-house artist had drawn it, then it was “bad”. Like a lot of other childish viewpoints I used to hold, this has slowly evaporated over time, and I have come to realise the importance of an artist translating characters into their own unique visual style.

I steal things. Lots of things. Ideas, mostly. Nothing I’ve ever done was 100% original. To be fair, nothing anyone does nowadays can be 100% original, even if they are 100% unaware that something has been done before. All we can do is remix. Take the best bits or the bits that work for us or the unusual bits and mix them all up together, do what feels right. For me to say that we should live in a world where there is no war is a little hypocritical. For there to be no war there should be no lies told, no crimes committed. For that, I am sorry. For the world to be as I want it, we should divide the burdens of living between all of us, but have complete freedom with what we do in our own time. This may sound like how life is now, but it isn’t. If we all worked hard and shared the load as a community, as a species, because our survival depended on it, then everything (including food and shelter) should be “free”. Even things like videogames and music should be freely available to all, on the proviso that everyone does their fair share. I don’t know if such a community could be created or maintained, I doubt it. People are selfish. I guess I am for wanting that.

Sometimes I think our existence is pointless. Other times I find many points in it. We are the universe trying to understand itself – what greater point is there than that? A point of life is to live it, how you want. This reflects my earlier sentiments of understanding and acting on the motivational quotes. A point of life is to make more life. Have children, raise them well. A point of life is to be a good person. Treat others how you would like to be treated yourself. A point of life is escape from it from time to time. Enjoy the worlds that other people have created, whether it be Cittàgazze, Lordran or the K-Project. A counter-point to that, and another point of life is to create worlds yourself. Create art, literature, performances, soundscapes – Make things. My point in bringing up Lord Of The Rings was to illustrate that despite him being on this Earth for roughly the same length of time as me, Tolkien created an entire universe. Not only did he create Middle Earth, but people loved it. Still do love it. Half the battle is making something – the other half is making something that people value. Enough people found the world he had created interesting enough to want to dress up and act it out.

While I feel that these two posts are the best and most honest things I have ever written, I still don’t think I’ve made any real decisive point in saying all these things. I’ve just rambled on little bit, but that is the title of this category, so it’s all good.
