A musing on children, growing up and adults

I’ve touched on this before, but I don’t really class myself as an adult – I certainly don’t behave like one. Or do I? My perceptions of what being an adult were formed when I was a kid. Now I am all grown up (in physical terms at least), am I not an adult simply because I don’t act how myself as a child thinks I should? When I was a kid, adults were boring and went to work all day in their boring little suits and sat around talking all evening about boring things that I, as a child, was not interested in. Now the situation is reversed. We live with my nephews now, and to them, I guess I am boring (tired when I get in from work, don’t want to play with the damned Lego), I go to work all day in my spine-tingling Asda outfit, and we do kinda sit around talking all evening until the kids are in bed and then I go off and play ultra-violent videogames.

I’ve spoken to a few people about this, young parents and older parents, and they both pretty much say that they’ve been changed by their children when they were born. Not in a “become more serious and boring and grown up” way, but in a mature, responsible way. They still have their fun, playing videogames and re-watching the first series of Heroes, but they do so in a responsible manner.
