Plants Vs Zombies 2: It’s About Time

This was originally posted on the now-defunct Random Fury! videogame blog.

I downloaded this for my Nexus 7 last week, and feel like I’ve only just scratched the surface to be honest – I’m about halfway through full Egypt completion – and Ancient Egypt is only one third of the current game. It’s basically more Plants Vs Zombies, but not tired old boring Plants Vs Zombies you played years ago, but fresh new exciting Plants Vs Zombies that looks really nice and has lots of fun new plants and zombies. The new plants all fit right in, thanks to them being very good at taking out the new types of zombie, and the new zombies fit in because they are all designed with at least as much imagination (and have as much personality) as the gang from the original game. The cast seem a lot more animated than they were in the first game though, and a little more pastel – someone threw out all the black marker pens when they were doing the final designs, I guess.

I’m surprised they went down the free-to-play route I must say. I’ve not been tempted to even check out what they’re selling in the in-game shop – I imagine it’s keys (they unlock new routes with new levels and new plants), quite probably in-game coins (used for in-game special attacks and plant food) too. As I said, I’m going back through levels I have already completed (totally not grinding), and some keys have appeared, and thanks to a random “Pinata Party” mini-game, I have over 10,000 coins – so I have little inclination to buying virtual progress with real-life currency. I haven’t hit the “Argh, this level is impossible – if only there were a way to get more plant food!” point yet, and I’m not even sure that point exists to be honest.

EA have pleasantly proven me wrong on this one – there I was assuming that most of the game would be hidden behind a paywall, when in fact it’s just hidden behind some good old fashioned grinding.

Oh, and about the subtitle – At first I thought it was a nod to how eagerly awaited the game was, not a time travel reference…
