Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Sadly, the game never feels as cool as this looks.

So I bought this because one of the guys at work was raving about it. I probably should have done some research first, because about two hours in, I really regretted buying it. The controls felt sluggish, and because I picked a Sniper Rifle as my primary weapon, killing stuff was troublesome. It had that typically Japanese mechanic, you know, the one where headshots aren’t instant kills. Frustrates me, that does. I got stupidly stuck on an early boss simply because the signposting was all over the place. One minute you had to run, the next you had to stand your ground, then run again, but it was never clear which option you had to take.

Once I’d got over that hurdle, and picked an automatic weapon, it was bearable. Spraying bullets into the mid-section of an enemy soldier typically caused him to bleed a lot, which attracted all the zombies in the area, taking the heat off you and your team. Oh, your “team”. They are a joy. Stupid, and prone to not using cover, they seem to spend more time dead than alive. Speaking of stupid: Then there’s the “Infection” element. Any time you or your team-mates are attacked by a zombie you could be “infected”, and slowly turn into a zombie yourself. While it is slightly funny to watch your death-cam after you’ve been turned, your zombified body running around attacking your former comrades, it is not at all funny to consider how absurd this is: If one of your team-mates is infected, you can choose to put them out of their misery by administering a cool, calm, headshot. Sure, this kills them, but it’s one less potential zombie to deal with. You can now waltz up to their headless body, hold a button for a few seconds, and voila! Team-mate alive! Head mended! Not a zombie! No repercussions!

The campaign overall is pretty poor, and the experience is not improved in co-op. The enemies (in true Resident Evil fashion) take far too many bullets to kill and it’s all pretty boring. I’m gonna grind out the last Achievements then never think about this game ever again.
