Week 26 – 2025

Graph view this week

One thing that bringing all my personal checklists, To-do lists and ideas over to Obsidian has made me realise is that I want to do so much, and only ever seem to get around to doing pretty much none of it…

Five distinct areas have now emerged whilst bringing everything together. Before, my notes and ideas were spread across multiple programs like OneNote and Microsoft To-Do, and websites like Miro and Trello – I’m just really enjoying the process of moving things over and seeing where they fit, and how they interact with each other.

I’m having one more look at the folders/files/tags organisation before I decide for sure on how it’s going to be – I’m not convinced that having nested tags is a good idea seeing as I’m using folders to keep notes organised, it’s just another way to use folders really. I’m thinking of going very broad with the tags, and not being so picky with how they are categorised, and using tags to reference what is mentioned in the note so that connections can be revealed in the graph view. Once changed, this weeks graph view will look very different to how it has for the past few weeks. Every time I look on Reddit there are conflicting opinions on how you should organise your vault in Obsidian, but there’s always that one little voice in the background saying “just use Obsidian, write notes, and the system will emerge”.

So, I like folders, and I like the idea of each folder having an index, but I don’t like the idea of having to manually update each of those indices (or Maps of Content as they are known in Obsidian), every time I add a note – so I’ve found a great community plugin called Waypoint, and it makes and updates the MoCs for me. Makes the graph view look much nicer too. Some folders don’t need MoCs, they feel better using a mind map in a canvas, with all the notes connected that way, but they are essentially the same thing. Thinking about it, I might well end up just getting rid of the canvases that have mind maps as they do tend to lag a bit compared to simple text MoCs. And then the folder that contains all my daily notes doesn’t really need an index, so simple “daily” and “weekly” tags are fine.

Also, I had the idea to use iframes to embed all of my BeepBox tracks on their own individual note. I had a bunch hanging around in my favourites on my browser, but this way with each one having it’s own special place, I can see it as it is playing, give it a title, take notes, add my thoughts, and just make it nicer to work with. I might even post some of the ones I consider “finished”.

Real progress was made in actual world building today. I’m fleshing out some details of the elemental energies that inhabit the universe I’m creating – not really sure how much to explain, as I want them to be revealed over time, organically, as they are encountered in the videogames. It seems like a lot of work now, that won’t ever be shown (unless in twenty years when it’s a massive worldwide success and I’m writing books on the creation process), but I figure that the more I solidify the ideas in my head by working on them in private now, the more bulletproof they’ll be when under scrutiny later. The orange circles on the graph view are the lore related notes, so you can see just how much was added this week.
