Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills: My Expectations

My expectations for this course are, first and foremost, to gain a basic understanding of Counselling, the skills and qualities required to be a Counsellor, and in particular to determine if I can see myself as a Counsellor in the future.

I have read a few books on Counselling, but I feel I can only learn so much from a book – a course led by a real person that I can talk to, ask questions to and get feedback from would be so much more practical and useful for actually learning the subtle nuances of Counselling. Regardless of whether I decide not to continue down the path of becoming a Counsellor I would like to improve my listening skills.

A large reason for me wanting to do this course is because I have a desire to help people, and I enjoy finding out about other people’s dreams and desires, I enjoy listening to them tell their “story”. I would like to get to know my fellow students and find out why they have also chosen to take this step as a way of increasing my interpersonal skills.

I also expect this course to increase my knowledge of myself, why think in certain ways, in certain patterns. I hope that completing this course will make me believe that a fulfilling career is a possibility for my future, and I will prove to myself that I can do more with my life.

As strange as it seems, just by being accepted onto the course, sitting in this room and listening to Pat impart her knowledge about Counselling has filled me with confidence – doing something feels infinitely better than doing nothing, and simply being here and attempting to better myself has increased my self-esteem.
