So I’m telling the internet.
So Jane’s family know, my family know, select friends know… Now it’s time for everyone else to be enlightened: We’re going to be parents.
Yes, that’s right. Jane is pregnant, so that means we are going to have a baby. A brand new person. Made by us. An extra dynamic in our relationship.
Jane sent me a text on Sunday the 12th, while I was at work. I read it on my break, a couple of hours after she sent it, and just couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the shift. When I got home she showed me this app that displayed “how your baby is doing”, and it said that the baby’s arms are more like flippers than arms! So, and I’m talking to you now, son or daughter, I’m going to call you Flipper, until we know if you’re going to be a boy or a girl and we give you a proper name.
It’s mental, and not at all scary in a bad way, which I thought it may have been. I’m just so happy all of a sudden. The January blues have been blown away, big time. We went to see our midwife today, she seems very nice, very professional, but also quite fun.
It’s funny, I’m considering everything from a new stand-point now. A new perspective. I’m not doing things just for me now, I have a son or daughter, a child, to think of. Granted, he or she is not here yet, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking about pretty much everything with them in mind. Sorry I’m not making much sense, or delivering any knowledge-bombs about my new-found responsibility, but it is kind of an abstraction for me. It has spurred me on to properly devoting my time to my dreams – I don’t mean this in a bad way because I was incredibly lucky to get the job at Asda when I needed it most, but don’t want to work there for the rest of my life – a job drawing silly pictures for people to look at is the target, with time enough spare to carry on developing the videogame videos, even on to comedy routines and such. People tell me I should be a comedian on a near-daily basis.
Anyway, I’ve started to wonder what they’ll be like. How they’ll talk. What habits they’ll have. What they’ll do when they are bored. How they’ll hold themselves. I’m even having imaginary arguments with them while I’m in the shower. Yeah, I’m at that stage already. Or is that just general insanity? I’m not sure. All I know is, I’ll cherish these months in which I can sleep as much as I want, but I’ll cherish the months when the little one is with us even more.
