I’m going to start collecting smaller pieces that I make into these monthly entries. I draw so many little bits and pieces that go un-published on the internet, I thought it’d be fun for you guys to see what kind of thing you’re missing out on!
First up, a self-portrait. Created in Sketchbook Pro on my Intuos, around thirty minutes. I just started off with the eye intending it to be my new avatar on DeviantArt, but added the caricature around it as I went.
I drew a couple of Adventure Time sketches – Finn and Jake are such fun characters to draw, and although they do have pretty well defined physical characteristics, I do feel they can easily be transferred to other art styles. I used to have a hang-up about fan-art, in that if it didn’t look exactly as the original creator or an authorised, in-house artist had drawn it, then it was “bad”. Like a lot of other childish viewpoints I used to hold, this has slowly evaporated over time, and I have come to realise the importance of an artist translating characters into their own unique visual style. Anyway, the sketches were in pencil, and I tried scanning them to show them off but they were too light, so it’s a case of going over them in a softer lead or maybe pen.
I’ve been quite busy in other areas of my life this January – I’m facing some pretty major changes soon, so I’m trying to prepare for that. This does mean that there wasn’t many sketches this month, but hey, you can’t have everything.
