Hyperpath

Random Game Friday: Hyperpath.

So, in this game, I guess you are some kind of General in charge of a fleet of colonizing spacecraft that can turn barren planets into ones that are ideal for you to inhabit. You can also terraform other races planets as well, which is handy, as the objective of the game is to purge the system of all the other varieties of aliens, and you do this via a very intuitive click, drag and release method. The game slowly introduces these new varieties of alien, and they all have quirky little abilities that differentiate them from one another – For example, one race have their populations cloaked which makes it tricky to determine which planets to go for, while another can call in reinforcements when they are losing their last planet. Pitting you against one, two, three or even four opponents all at once at the levels you start at wouldn’t be fair, so you do get to level up your parameters so you can attack/defend/colonise better.

It’s not a bad idea, but a little let down by how frantic it gets when there are five races on screen at once, all jostling for planets that have numbers on them that are all changing really quickly. The game can be over before you know it, which isn’t fun. Still, it was pretty addictive and I did finish it – I found that the key tactic was to hold off at the start while you can only claim neutral planets and not attack your enemies – they tend to accidentally waste a lot of their units competing with the other races for the neutral planets, leaving them ripe for the picking.
