Friday? Check. Random game? Check. RGF this week: Cake Monsters.
I love colours. I love combining them, too. Which is just as well really, as this game involves mixing monsters to eat multi-coloured cakes. Built with powerful browser-based game creation tool PuzzleScript, Cake Monsters features monsters that love cake, but only that which is the same colour as their scaly hides. This actually comes in handy, as cake which is not the same colour as the monster acts as an impassable block which lets you manoeuvre the other monsters around. Did I mention that you control all the monsters at once? No? Well you do. You can see why those non-same coloured cake/monster combinations are useful now, yes?
Things take a turn for the more complicated when you realise that making two monsters occupy the same space mixes their colours. Useful if you need an orange monster – not so useful if you require a red monster and a yellow monster. Keeping certain monsters apart to eat primary coloured cakes that are trickily positioned behind tertiary coloured cakes is key. Mixing too many colours makes brown monsters – these are annoying because unlike real-life there is rarely any brown cake, and they can’t be changed to any other colours no matter how hard you try. Once brown, always brown. On some levels it can be quite tricky to stop everything turning brown – Not a sentence anyone ever wants to hear. Throw in X blocks later on that nullify any monsters on contact, and it gets a little bit hairy. Despite the perceived difficulty, progression through the game is quite smooth thanks to the unlimited undo function.
This lovely little game is full of character, challenge and cake – here’s that url again: http://struct.ca/games/cakemonsters/. Try it out!
