What is it with all these Nerd, Geek, Dweeb and Dork t-shirts about at the moment? And why do I feel like 90% of the people wearing them are not nerds, geeks, dweebs, losers or dorks? The majority of them are teenage girls, and look quite up to date with their fashion. They do not look like the kind of people who could follow the plot of Game of Thrones, get a Killing Frenzy in Halo or explain why Klingons didn’t have knobbly foreheads in the original series of Star Trek. If they were really nerds, wouldn’t they wear t-shirts that look like random, normal t-shirts but are actually subtle references to nerdy TV shows or videogames or bands or comics that only fellow fans of nerdy TV shows or videogames or bands or comics would understand? For example, I have a t-shirt that is yellow and green, and has a Japanese symbol across the front of it. If you didn’t know about Jet Set Radio Future, you’d think it was simply a yellow and green t-shirt.
Tourists, the lot of them.
Anyway, that pre-ramble is to set the scene for what deeply disappointed me yesterday afternoon. There was a kid who was in shopping with his Mum, Dad and sister, he was about 12 I’d say, and he was wearing one of these slogan t-shirts. I saw him from the side at first, I noticed it ended in “t”. I had a little think about what it could be, tried to work it out in my head, but I would never have got it in a million years. After about five seconds of me thinking, the kid turned, and I saw the word which was emblazoned across his chest in 500pt bold type.
The word was “cunt”.
Clearly the boy did not think what he was wearing was inappropriate, and neither did his parents, who either provided him with money to buy this item of clothing or purchased it for him, and then allowed him to wear it. His father looked a geezer, a manual labourer who enjoys fighting and drinking. His mother was vastly overweight and looked as if she had given up on personal hygiene. The kid looked like a mixture of both, and ironically, given what I said previously about the slogans not matching up to the people who wear them, this one was probably a fit for what was on his t-shirt. Cocky, and like he was about to steal anything that wasn’t tied down. It really makes me fear for the future of the human race when I see parents who do not understand that they are supposed to be role models for their children, but sadly I see it on a daily basis.
