Day five was to be our last day on the Isle of Wight, but our ferry wasn’t until 4:30, so we had time to have one last cool day. Packing everything into the car was speedy and efficient, Jane is very good like that. Our first stop of the day was at Robin Hill. It had some nice woodland, cool climbing frames and a giant ship with a hawk and a spiked fist on the front of it. The ship with a hawk and a spiked fist was actually one of those rides that goes backwards and forwards, it was quite exciting. We also saw some Weeping Angels, and both the boys descended into Doctor Who mode and were like “RUN!”. It was funny.
After that adventure, we went to Godshill again, found a different pub and had ice cream. I had a Knickerbocker Glory (pictured), it was fucking lovely. We then arrived at the ferry port at 2:45 in the hope that we could get on a ferry and go home, but the man in charge of the ferries said there wasn’t enough room on the ferry and that we had to come back at 4:30.
Now, here’s another example of my luck. Earlier in the week, we had driven through Ryde, and out of the corner of my eye I saw a shop called the “Fantastic Store”, written in that iconic and instantly recognisable (well, for geeks, anyway) Fantastic Four font. I thought to myself that it’d be quite interesting to go and have a look inside. Alas, we drove right on by and it was never mentioned or thought of again. Until… We had time to kill so thought we’d walk around Ryde for a bit, and hey, there’s a carnival of some kind coming down the road, that’s cool, let’s stop and watch it for a bit. Where did we stop? Right outside the Fantastic Store. I had to pop in and take a look. It was reasonably cool, lots of random loose G1 Transformers and Action Force figures, old comics, t-shirts, pin badges, posters… I had to leave, as I knew that if I spent any longer in there then I would spend a lot of money. Cool shop though.
Not so cool was the final shop we went in, some kind of haberdashery that sold awful hats. Claire bought some for the boys. Look at the picture. Look at it. Awful.
Then we went to the ferry port, got on a ferry, drove home and unpacked and had a few beers and a BBQ.
Good holiday.
