Lips

Yes, we finally got around to it.

After years of deliberating about which singing game to get, Jane and Claire went halves on Lips: Number One Hits with two microphones. We had a quick dabble last night and it was ok, but when we properly set it up with my Gamer Profile earlier today (it was a sneaky way to get free and easy Achievements really) and downloaded some new songs (I convinced Jane we needed to get Life is a Rollercoaster by Ronan Keating) and had a go on some of the different modes and stuff it was awesome. Even Lewis had a go! He sang a bit too quietly for the microphone to pick his voice up, and he couldn’t really keep up with reading the lyrics, but he had such a great time on Saturday night, he was the one who suggested we play it tonight.

Although my singing voice is just awful, I seem to be doing quite well, scoring highly and matching notes well. Jane and I are even in the top 500 for You Get What You Give by The New Radicals. Anyway, although I sound like a dying cat, I’m enjoying it very much – years ago I would’ve never dreamed of singing out loud, engaging in such a social activity. Just goes to show, you’re never too old.

Have you played Singstar at all? If so, how does Lips stand up? Also, do you think Eurogamer’s review was accurate or was it one of their frequent talking-complete-bollocks efforts?

I’ve been thinking about a karaoke game for ages, and everyone seems to rate Singstar over Lips but I don’t have a PS3. Bah.

I’ve only played Singstar very briefly, in a packed exhibition hall (Game On 2006), so in that respect, I’m not too clued up on how the two games stack up in relation to each other. We took the song choice into consideration more than the software, and the fact we don’t have a PS2 or PS3 in the house but we do have a 360 set up downstairs practically cemented the choice.

Having read it just now, I think Eurogamer were both harsh in their initial review of Lips, and harsh in that they’ve not reviewed an up to date version as the newer ones do address some of the flaws they mention. I guess it’s their job to be critical, but really, all we wanted was a karaoke game and Lips is a fully functional karaoke game. Although, we’re not strictly treating it as a game, more a social thing – on a Friday and Saturday night Jane, Jane’s sister and Jane’s sister’s kids and I all “get on da mic” and just sing songs. We want to sing, Lips shows us what the words to the song are.

Erm… That wasn’t really much help, was it? 🙂

Yeah, it didn’t work out. I’m guessing you’ve not read this yet anyway, so it don’t matter! 😀
