Super Mega Ultra Battle Robot 2

This was originally posted on the now-defunct Random Fury! videogame blog.

This week on RGF it is: Super Mega Ultra Battle Robot 2. That’s one hell of a title, right? Well, it’s one hell of a game, with a lovely art style, some really lovely main character designs.

This game is a scrolling shoot ’em up, in a similar vein to Gradius or R-Type, and all manner of enemy aircraft, missiles, mechs and tanks come at you. A key strategy is to not let too many enemies get past you – any that do manage to squeak past build up a meter which, once full, unleashes a large enemy battleship upon you. It does have a little RPG twist in that when you score so many points you unlock new parts for your Battle Robot. It’s not your standard “more damage” or “faster movement speed” between level power-ups, most of them add something but take away something else, in a risk versus reward fashion. You have a Halo-style shield system which can absorb enemy bullets, but it does need to recharge after absorbing too many – all you need to do is not shoot for a bit until it recharges. Get hit when you have no shields and you lose 1HP. Lose them all and it’s game over, obviously.

I was going to do an RGF for the first game, but I found it after I had already sunk an hour or two into the second game, and it does not compare in any way, so thought I’d give it a miss.
