Hey, here’s a neat twist on the old Mario formula – every time you collect a coin, you get an extra plumber! I don’t mean you get one more life in reserve, I mean one extra plumber on the screen at the same time as your existing plumber. Get lots of coins, get lots of plumbers! Control these extra plumbers all at once with skill and panache, combining the varied power-ups (such as bombs, plumbers that light up the surrounding area, ghost plumbers and vampire plumbers) to effortlessly traverse the increasingly difficult levels… Or mess things up, lose all your plumbers to routine bad-guys and get hopelessly stuck on puzzles.
I didn’t mention that I don’t particularly like platforming games, did I? Especially ones that combine precision platforming with puzzles.
It’s undoubtedly a great game, and clearly a whole lot of thought has gone into the level layouts, the various power-up systems, and how they combine to create the challenge. But for me, the early tutorial levels were the most fun to play and replay, maximising your plumber gains and working out optimal routes, just enjoying having a load of sprites flashing across the screen – but it got really fiendish, really quickly. It was far too hard for me. I would’ve preferred to have fluked my way to the finish line on every level in as little time as possible because to be honest, for me, the joy of the game came from having twenty plumbers at different points on the screen jumping all over the place all at once.
