I’m sure you all know already, but for clarity and completion, this is a Dalek from the popular British sci-fi series: Doctor Who. My wife convinced me to paint this for one of our friends that she works with – he’s a huge fan of Doctor Who. Trying to convey emotion through a Dalek is tough! You’ve only really got the position of it in relation to the camera, and whichever direction it’s eye stalk, plunger and laser are pointing. From an artists point of view it’s a pain for sure, but I guess that’s the idea regarding their appearance though – they really feel no emotion other than hatred – and what is more hateful than a metal exterior with a couple of weapons sticking out?
There are no work in progress shots for this one, as it was on a pretty short timescale and while I wasn’t rushing, I was working fairly quickly. My process was fairly standard – obtain references, sketch some ideas for composition, work out a rough, block some colours in, work on details and lighting. The background was quite experimental – I knocked it up in Hexels to start with, then imported it into ArtRage and fiddled with it. Hexels is a great new art program that I was introduced to by the popular YouTube channel VSauce. Check out some of the amazing examples of work created with Hexels here. I’m quite happy with how well the colours spilled from the background onto the Dalek itself – it unifies the entire picture, you know?
What do you think? Could I have done any of it better? Feel free to leave a message – be it good or bad I appreciate the feedback.
