I used to go to the local library in Waterlooville quite a lot on my split shifts. I found it a nice place to get some art done, read a new issue of ImagineFX or Fantasy Artist in peace, or do some research on a current project (there’s something a bit more… honest about flicking through a book rather than looking at pictures online). I don’t really get the opportunity to do so anymore as I don’t do any split shifts, but if I ever do, then it’s a more attractive 3-hour diversionary alternative to going home and coming back to work.
You do get to see some interesting characters, too. There’s the odd people who come in and read the new newspapers (can they not afford to buy one themselves I wonder), and an old guy who comes in and finds a local history book and takes notes (I would love to know what kind of project he is working on to be honest). Funniest of all are the people who come in and use the public computers. I realise that not everyone can afford a PC and a broadband connection, but still, it’s a bit rich when they come in and moan about how slow the PC is, or how sluggish the internet is. How cheeky is that!
Still, I love the atmosphere at the library, and if I ever do have to do split shifts again then I’ll gladly take my sketchbook along and do some doodles. The staff are friendly and a conversation I had with one member of staff directly influenced a piece of art I was working on.
